During the COVID-19 crisis, we continue to have service opportunities virtually every day at various times, enabling us to distribute 8,000 bags of nutritious groceries each week. For our Joyful Grocery Bagging events, volunteers help Martha’s Table in pre-packing bags of fruits, vegetables and pantry items to be distributed at designated food sites around DC. We also continue to run McKenna’s Wagon, our mobile food service that goes out 365 days a year to distribute meals at two stops in downtown DC. Volunteers serve food to our guests and unload the van upon return to Martha’s Table. Helping out on McKenna’s Wagon allows our volunteers to see the direct impact they are having on community members who are experiencing hunger and housing instability.

Martha’s Table has implemented strict volunteer guidelines to ensure the safety and health of our volunteers, staff and community members during every event. We ask that every volunteer bring a face mask for their shift and please stay home if experiencing any symptoms of illness. Emergency Food Network

Emergency Food Network

Emergency Food Network’s 8-acre organic farm, located outside of Puyallup, provides over 100,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and fruits each year to local food pantries. The staff could not run the farm without volunteers of all experience levels who assist with planting, weeding, and harvesting from April to September.

This year, your help is more crucial that ever. During a typical season, the farm would be partially staffed by a volunteer cohort from the Washington Corrections Center for Women. However, the Center has suspended volunteering this year, leaving the farm critically short staffed during the busiest time of year.

Three hour long volunteer sessions are available every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Large fields are ideal for safe social distancing, and we are limiting volunteer numbers, requiring masks, and sanitizing shared tools to make this a safe experience for everyone! Kids under 15 are welcome to attend with an adult!

Jewish Relief Agency

The Jewish Relief Agency is looking for volunteers to help deliver boxes of food to recipients in August. Volunteers can choose to deliver in Philadelphia County, Delaware County, Bucks County, and Montgomery County. Volunteers will need to pick up the boxes at JRA’s warehouse in Northeast Philly. JRA’s clients depend on volunteers to deliver food to their homes. JRA has initiated safety protocols and procedures surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and has implemented a drive-thru model called Express Pick-Up for all deliveries and a Knock, Drop and Go policy at recipient homes. Volunteers are also required to wear a facemask during pickup and deliveries. Volunteers can sign up for the August Food Distribution by visiting jewishrelief.org. Volunteers are needed on Wednesday 8/5 through Friday 8/7 from 9am-2pm, and Sunday 8/9 from 9am-2pm.

Virtual Opportunity: COVID-19 Food Assistance Project – Volunteers are needed to verify emergency food site information across the nation. Many sites have changed operations and hours due to COVID-19, volunteers are ascertaining these changes and updating our database via a survey form. Volunteers should be moderately comfortable using web technology and speaking over the phone. The results are freely available to the public by request, via an electronic mapping tool, and the USDA Hunger Hotline. Having accurate data means a hungry family can find an open pantry near them at any time.
